The Maritime Charities Group conference took place 28-29 October 2019 at Trinity House, London, and was attended by over 120 maritime organisations.
Two years on from the publication of Navigating Change: A Review of the UK Maritime Charity Welfare Sector, the Maritime Charities Group initiated an update of the report – Navigating Change: A 2019 Update and organised the Conference to present the updated findings and provide an opportunity to reflect on changes in our sector and in wider society.
In 2019, 68% of Maritime Welfare Charities surveyed reported that they expected the next 12 months to be a ‘crunch time’ in terms of increasing demand for services and support.

Charitable provision for serving seafarers has increased, with the biggest rises seen in the Royal Navy and Royal Marines sector. However, over 50% of Maritime Welfare Charities were of the opinion that more needs to be done to support serving and younger retired seafarers.
Maritime Welfare Charities were asked about other areas of service provision that required development. 82% of those surveyed identified inadequate safeguards against modern slavery, 56% identified alcohol and drug abuse and 48% mentioned the mental health and well-being of serving seafarers.
